communities in a cooperative effort to provide shelter, meals, and resources to transition families in crisis back to self-sufficiency and independence.

As part of the program, participants were served a soup kitchen meal, and took part in a simulation activity which illustrated all the obstacles that homeless families face. Former successful graduate, and now Assistant Director of Family Promise, LaToya Carter, spoke to the gathering about her homelessness in a moving account of her personal experiences. Rev. Phyllis Hartman of St. James’ Episcopal and Dianne Haarmeyer, hosts of the event, were pleased with the turn-out and enthusiasm of those attending. Rev. Gerald Hyche (St. James’ Episcopal) and Rev. Lorin Darst (Grace Lutheran) showed great support for the event, and Rev. Darst even camped out overnight! Family Promise Board President, Leon Virtue, along with Board members Bill Sisco and Joan Blair, as well as Director Linda King, also attended and expressed their gratitude for the volunteers of these two churches, their ministers, and all the participants for their support of the organization. Such an event not only raises much-needed funding, but an awareness of the problem of homelessness our county faces.

We successfully graduated 9 families into the community, the highest number in the past 3 years! A new “signature” event, Cardboard City, was introduced to our network as a major fundraiser, as well as a tool to build awareness and understanding of the obstacles our families face. Our dedicated congregations stand strong at 15 in number, and their hundreds of volunteers serve literally thousands of hours each year providing shelter, meals, and compassionate assistance to our families. And the significant donations made by our supporters will assist us in retiring the debt on The Day Center in the coming year. That continued support is much needed, and you may make contributions via our “Donate Now” button on our website or mail check to Family Promise, P.O. Box 692, Conroe, TX 77305.

Snapshot 2011 Year in Review

DID YOU KNOW? In the U.S., one child in six lives in poverty. Nearly one in four children in the state of Texas (according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture) are “food insecure”, meaning they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
